JEE Main College List Rank Wise — NITs, IIITs & GFTIs

Your JEE Main rank decides which NITs, IIITs and GFTIs you can get through JoSAA counselling (138 institutes in 2026, including the IITs, which use JEE Advanced rank). The only reliable way to see your options is last year's official closing ranks for your category, quota and branch. This guide shows what the top of the list looked like and how to read the rest.

Top NITs: CSE Closing Ranks (JoSAA 2025)

These are the final-round closing ranks for B.Tech Computer Science at the top five NITs, for Other-State quota, Open, gender-neutral candidates:

How Rank Bands Usually Work

• Under about 5,000: CSE at the top NITs was within reach in 2025 for Other-State Open candidates (see above).
• 5,000–20,000: typically CSE or ECE at many other established NITs and IIITs, or core branches at the top NITs.
• 20,000–50,000: typically newer NITs and IIITs in popular branches, or established institutes in less popular branches, plus home-state quota seats.
• 50,000–1,00,000: mainly newer institutes, less popular branches, GFTIs and home-state quota seats.
• Above 1,00,000: limited JoSAA options for Open category — look at CSAB special rounds and state counselling too.

These bands are a rough guide for Open-category candidates, not official figures. Always check the actual closing ranks for your category, quota and branch.

How to Build Your Own College List

1. Estimate your rank. Use our percentile-to-rank guide or JEE rank predictor.
2. Pull last year's closing ranks. On josaa.nic.in → Opening & Closing Ranks, choose the final round and filter by your category, quota (home state or other state) and gender.
3. Shortlist quickly. Our JEE college predictor gives a first list to refine.
4. Sort into three groups: aspirational (closing rank better than yours), realistic (around your rank) and safe (closing rank well beyond yours).
5. Check each institute's NIRF data for branch-wise placements before you fix your order.

Category and Quota Make a Big Difference

OBC-NCL, EWS, SC and ST seats are filled on each category's own rank list, so a reserved-category candidate is compared with others in the same category. Home-state quota (50% of NIT seats) is filled separately from other-state quota. Both can change your options dramatically — there is no fixed multiplier, so look up the closing ranks for exactly your category and quota.

Institutes Not in JoSAA

Some well-known colleges admit through their own processes, not JoSAA — for example IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Delhi, private universities such as Thapar, VIT, SRM and Manipal, and BITS (through BITSAT). Check each one's admission page separately.

5 Tips for JoSAA Choice Filling

1. Use previous year data. Download JoSAA Opening & Closing Ranks from josaa.nic.in — your allotment will usually follow similar patterns.
2. Add your home-state NIT. Half the seats are reserved for home-state candidates, and closing ranks are often much easier.
3. Fill plenty of choices. There is no penalty for filling more, as long as you would accept each one. Add aspirational, realistic and safe choices.
4. Research placements before deciding. Check NIRF rankings and each institute's placement reports, branch by branch.
5. Don't ignore GFTIs. Some GFTIs compare well with mid-tier NITs — research them before ruling them out.
