5 Tips for JoSAA Choice Filling
- Use previous year data. Download JoSAA Opening & Closing Ranks from josaa.nic.in. Your admission will closely follow these patterns.
- Add home state NIT. 50% seats reserved for home state — cutoffs are much lower.
- Fill 80–100+ choices. No penalty for filling more. Add aspirational, realistic, and safety choices.
- Research placements before deciding. A college's placement record matters more than its name. Check NIRF rankings and placement reports.
- Don't ignore GFTIs. IIEST Shibpur, PEC Chandigarh, and BIT Mesra have excellent placements comparable to mid-tier NITs.
Closing ranks based on JoSAA 2024–2025 data (Other State quota, last round). Home state quota cutoffs are significantly lower. Ranks change each year based on paper difficulty and candidate count. Always check josaa.nic.in for official data. Placement data from NIRF 2025 reports. Last updated: February 2026.

What college can I get with 50,000 rank in JEE Main?
With AIR 50,000 (General): NITs like NIT Patna, NIT Raipur, NIT Silchar in branches like ECE/EE. IIITs like IIIT Kota, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Sonepat in CSE/IT. Several GFTIs in good branches. For OBC at 50,000: options expand to established NITs in non-CS branches. Check JoSAA previous year closing ranks for exact options.
What college can I get with 1 lakh rank in JEE Main?
With AIR 1,00,000 (General): newer NITs (NIT Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh) in most branches. Some GFTIs. Options are limited through JoSAA at this rank for General. OBC/SC/ST candidates at this rank have significantly more options. Also explore state counselling — many good state colleges admit at this rank.
Is branch more important than college?
It depends on your career goal. For software/IT careers: CSE/IT at a Tier-2 NIT often has better placements than Mechanical at a Tier-1 NIT. For core engineering: college reputation matters more (companies like L&T, Tata Steel recruit from top colleges regardless of branch). For higher studies (MS/PhD abroad): both college tier and CGPA matter. General rule: prioritise branch if you want IT jobs.
What is the difference between home state and other state quota in NITs?
NITs reserve 50% seats for home state candidates and 50% for other states. Home state cutoff is significantly lower (sometimes 20,000–50,000 ranks lower for the same branch). Your home state is where you passed/are passing Class 12. This is a huge advantage — always add home state NIT choices in JoSAA.
Are GFTIs worth joining?
Some GFTIs are excellent: IIEST Shibpur (formerly BE College), School of Planning and Architecture, PEC Chandigarh, Thapar Institute. Others are average. Check: (1) NIRF ranking, (2) placement data, (3) faculty quality, (4) location and infrastructure. A good GFTI can be better than a low-ranked NIT. Do not dismiss GFTIs without research.
How to check previous year JoSAA cutoffs?
Visit josaa.nic.in → Opening & Closing Ranks. Select year, round, institute type, programme, and category. The closing rank of the last round is the most relevant — it shows the maximum rank at which a student was admitted. Check last 3 years for a reliable estimate.
