JEE Main Exam Pattern — Paper Structure, Marking & Time Strategy
JEE Main exam pattern — 75 compulsory questions, +4/−1 on MCQs and numericals, 3-hour CBT, no calculator, plus time management and section strategy.
JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 compulsory questions for 300 marks in 3 hours. Each subject: 20 MCQs + 5 numerical value questions. Every wrong answer, MCQ or numerical, costs −1. The exam is computer-based (CBT) and no calculator is allowed. This is the pattern NTA used in 2025 and 2026; the 2027 information bulletin is not out yet.
Paper 1 Structure (B.E./B.Tech)
| Subject | Section A (MCQ) | Section B (Numerical) | Total Questions | Max Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 (all compulsory) | 5 (all compulsory) | 25 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 20 (all compulsory) | 5 (all compulsory) | 25 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 20 (all compulsory) | 5 (all compulsory) | 25 | 100 |
| Total | 60 | 15 | 75 | 300 |
Marking Scheme
| Question Type | Correct | Wrong | Unattempted | Key Insight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ (Section A) | +4 | −1 | 0 | Attempt only if you can eliminate at least 2 options |
| Numerical Value (Section B) | +4 | −1 | 0 | No options to eliminate — answer only when you have worked it out |
Critical insight: Numerical value questions carry the same −1 as MCQs, and you can't eliminate options, so a random guess is a bad bet. You type the answer with the mouse and an on-screen numeric keypad, rounded off to the nearest integer (2026 bulletin).
Paper 2A & 2B (B.Arch / B.Planning)
| Paper | Subjects | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2A (B.Arch) | Maths (100) + Aptitude (200) + Drawing (100) | 400 | 3 hours |
| Paper 2B (B.Planning) | Maths (100) + Aptitude (200) + Planning (100) | 400 | 3 hours |
Paper 2A Drawing section is pen-and-paper (even though rest is CBT). Paper 2B Planning section is MCQ-based.
Time Management Strategy (3 Hours = 180 Minutes)
| Phase | Time | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1: Chemistry | 45–50 min | Fastest to finish. Inorganic (10 min) → Physical (20 min) → Organic (15–20 min). Target: 80+ marks. |
| Phase 2: Maths or Physics | 55–60 min | Your second-strongest subject. Do easy questions first, mark hard ones for later. |
| Phase 3: Remaining Subject | 55–60 min | Weakest subject last — you have secured marks already. |
| Phase 4: Review | 15 min | Check marked-for-review questions. Recheck the numerical answers you typed. Confirm every answer shows as answered in the question palette. |
Per-Question Time Budget
| Question Type | Ideal Time | Max Time |
|---|---|---|
| Chemistry MCQ (easy/medium) | 1–2 min | 2.5 min |
| Physics MCQ | 2–3 min | 4 min |
| Maths MCQ | 2–3 min | 4 min |
| Numerical (any subject) | 3–4 min | 5 min |
Rule: If a question takes more than 4 minutes, mark it for review and move on. Come back during Phase 4.
Practise under exam conditions
Super Tutor's full-length JEE Main mock exams follow the real pattern — 75 questions, +4/−1 marking on MCQs and numericals, and a single 3-hour timer.
Practise with Super Tutor — start freeCBT Interface — What to Expect
- Question palette: On the right of the screen, showing the status of every question — not visited, not answered, answered, marked for review, and answered & marked for review.
- Navigation: Click any question number to jump directly. No need to go in order.
- Mark for Review: Use this for questions you want to revisit. A question that is "answered and marked for review" is still evaluated; one only marked for review, with no answer, is not.
- Subject switching: Tabs at the top — Physics, Chemistry, Maths. Switch freely anytime.
- Timer: Countdown timer at the top right, showing total remaining time. The exam submits itself when it reaches zero.
- No calculator: Calculators in any form, including on-screen ones, are not allowed in JEE Main. Numerical answers are typed with an on-screen numeric keypad.
- Rough sheet: Physical rough sheets provided. Write your name and application number on each one. Return ALL sheets.
Attempt Strategy by Difficulty
| Round | What to Do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 (Easy) | Go through ALL questions. Answer easy ones instantly. Mark medium/hard for review. | 60–70 min |
| Round 2 (Medium) | Attempt marked questions that you can solve with some thought. | 60–70 min |
| Round 3 (Hard/Review) | Try remaining hard questions. Make educated guesses on MCQs only if you can eliminate 2 options. Don't guess numericals. | 30–40 min |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending too long on one question. 5+ minutes on one question = 1–2 easier questions missed elsewhere.
- Not reading the question carefully. JEE Main has tricky wording. Read twice before solving.
- Calculation errors. Use rough sheets. Write each step. Double-check numerical answers.
- Guessing numerical answers. A wrong numerical costs −1, just like an MCQ. Leave it blank unless you have worked it out.
- Panic if first subject goes badly. Each subject is independent. A bad Chemistry section does not affect your Maths score. Reset mentally between subjects.
- Not using the "Mark for Review" feature. This is your best tool. Use it liberally.

How many questions are there in JEE Main?
JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 75 questions — 25 per subject (Physics, Chemistry, Maths). Each subject has Section A (20 MCQs) and Section B (5 numerical value questions), and all 75 are compulsory. Total marks: 300. NTA dropped the old choice of 5 out of 10 numericals from 2025, and 2026 used the same pattern.
Is there negative marking in JEE Main?
Yes, on both MCQs and numericals. Every question carries +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer and 0 if left blank (NTA JEE Main 2026 bulletin). Numerical questions have carried negative marking since 2022, so only enter a numerical answer you have actually worked out.
What is the duration of JEE Main exam?
3 hours (180 minutes) for Paper 1. PwD/PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe get 20 minutes per hour extra — 4 hours in total. In 2026 the exam ran in two shifts: 9:00 AM–12:00 noon and 3:00 PM–6:00 PM. There is one 3-hour timer and no sectional time limit, so you can switch between subjects in any order.
Is JEE Main online or offline?
JEE Main Paper 1 is a Computer Based Test (CBT) held at NTA exam centres. You sit at a computer and click on answer options, or type numerical answers with an on-screen numeric keypad. Rough sheets are provided at the centre. Calculators in any form, including on-screen ones, are not allowed, and you cannot bring a phone or any electronic device.
Can I attempt JEE Main twice in a year?
Yes. NTA conducts JEE Main in 2 sessions: Session 1 (January) and Session 2 (April). You can appear in one or both, and NTA uses the better of your two scores. For 2027, NTA's tentative calendar puts Session 1 on 22–24 and 28–30 January 2027; Session 2 is expected in April 2027 (not yet announced).
What is the best order to attempt subjects in JEE Main?
A common approach: start with your strongest subject (build confidence and secure marks), then attempt your second-strongest, then the weakest. Common order: Chemistry → Maths → Physics or Chemistry → Physics → Maths. Chemistry is usually fastest to finish (15–20 minutes for Inorganic). Save at least 15 minutes for review.
