WBJEE Preparation Guide
How to prepare for WBJEE: the two-paper OMR pattern, category-wise negative marking, strategy, books and previous papers for West Bengal engineering.
WBJEE is the gateway to top engineering colleges in West Bengal. Here is everything you need — pattern, strategy, books, and tips. WBJEE 2026 was held on Sunday 24 May 2026; WBJEE 2027 is expected between April and May 2027 on a Sunday (not yet announced).
WBJEE Exam Overview
- Conducted by WBJEEB.
- Subjects — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.
- Paper 1 (Maths) — 75 questions, 100 marks. Paper 2 (Phy+Chem) — 80 questions, 100 marks. Each paper is 2 hours, on the same day.
- OMR-based (pen-and-paper), with three question categories — Category 1 (1 mark, −¼), Category 2 (2 marks, −½), Category 3 (2 marks, one or more correct options, partial credit, no negative marking).
Preparation Strategy
- NCERT Class 11 and 12 — the foundation for all three subjects.
- WBJEE is generally easier than JEE Main — focus on conceptual clarity and speed in Maths.
- Solve previous years' WBJEE papers — WBJEEB posts old question papers on its website, and they show the question style.
- Only Category 3 has no negative marking — guess carefully in Categories 1 and 2, and in Category 3 mark only the options you are sure of, since any wrong option scores zero.

Is WBJEE easier than JEE Main?
Generally yes. WBJEE follows the Class 11–12 syllabus closely and JEE Main aspirants usually find it manageable — but Mathematics is a long 2-hour paper of 75 questions, and Categories 1 and 2 carry negative marking.
Can I prepare for JEE and WBJEE simultaneously?
Yes. JEE preparation covers most of the WBJEE syllabus. Practise WBJEE previous papers for its OMR format, its three question categories and the multi-correct Category 3 questions.
What is the WBJEE marking scheme?
In WBJEE 2026, Category 1 questions carried 1 mark with −¼ for a wrong answer; Category 2 carried 2 marks with −½ for a wrong answer; Category 3 carried 2 marks, could have one or more correct options, gave partial credit and had no negative marking. You need to sit both papers to get a General Merit Rank, and ties are broken first by fewer negative marks.
