  • Biotic components are living organisms such as plants, animals, microorganisms, and human beings.

  • Producers are autotrophs that make food from inorganic substances using solar energy in the presence of chlorophyll.
  • Green plants and certain bacteria are producers.
  • Producers occupy the first trophic level.

3. Food Chain, Trophic Levels, and Food Web

  • A food chain is a sequence of organisms where one organism is eaten by the next.
  • Each step or level in a food chain is called a trophic level.
  • Producers are at the first trophic level.

4. Energy Flow in an Ecosystem

  • Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional.
  • Energy captured by autotrophs does not return to the Sun.
  • Energy passed to herbivores does not go back to autotrophs.
