Topics in Heredity

1

1. Variation and Heredity

  • New individuals produced by reproduction are similar but subtly different because variation is present.
  • Asexual reproduction produces individuals with only minor differences due to small DNA copying inaccuracies.
  • Sexual reproduction maximises the number of successful variations compared to asexual reproduction.
2

2. Mendel’s Experiments and Basic Inheritance

  • Gregor Johann Mendel studied inheritance in garden pea plants.
  • He used contrasting visible characters such as round and wrinkled seeds, tall and short plants, and white and violet flowers.
  • Mendel was the first to keep count of individuals showing a particular trait in each generation.
3

3. Dihybrid Cross and Independent Inheritance

  • Mendel also studied two traits together, such as tall and short plants and round and wrinkled seeds.
  • Tallness and round seeds are dominant traits.
  • The F1 progeny of a tall round plant and a short wrinkled plant were all tall and had round seeds.
4

4. How Traits Are Expressed

  • DNA contains information for making proteins in the cell.
  • A gene is a section of DNA that provides information for one protein.
  • Plant height depends on the amount of a plant hormone.
