  • Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen.
  • Main classes: saturated, unsaturated, and aromatic.
  • LPG, CNG, petrol, diesel, and kerosene are hydrocarbon-based fuels.

  • General formula of alkanes: CnH2n+2.
  • Alkanes are saturated open-chain hydrocarbons.
  • Methane is the first member and ethane the second.

  • Alkanes are prepared by hydrogenation, reduction, Wurtz reaction, decarboxylation, Kolbe's method, isomerisation, aromatization, pyrolysis, and steam reforming.
  • Wurtz reaction gives higher alkanes with even carbon number when identical alkyl halides are used.
  • Methane cannot be prepared by Kolbe's electrolytic method.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

All hydrocarbons behave in the same way because they contain only carbon and hydrogen.

Benzene contains three ordinary double bonds, so it should behave like a normal alkene.

Markovnikov addition means the negative part always goes to the carbon with more hydrogens.
