What to Focus On

  • Cathode rays are streams of electrons.
  • Electron charge is negative and its mass is very small.
  • Canal rays are positively charged gaseous ions and depend on the gas used.

  • Thomson model = uniformly spread positive charge with embedded electrons.
  • Rutherford model = nucleus at center with electrons around it.
  • Gold foil experiment proved that atoms are mostly empty space.

  • Atomic number = number of protons.
  • Mass number = protons + neutrons.
  • Isobars: same A, different Z.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Electrons move in fixed circular paths around the nucleus like planets, so an orbit is the same as an orbital.

Electrons can have exact position and exact velocity at the same time if the instrument is good enough.

Bohr's model works for all atoms, so it should explain helium and other multi-electron atoms too.
