Moving from self-employment to casual wage work

Casualisation refers to the process of workers moving from self-employment and regular salaried employment to casual wage work.

Table 6.1 shows the worker-population ratio for men as 56.4 per cent in India in 2023-24. This means a little more than half of all men were workers. The other figures in the table are for women and the total population.

About 24 per cent

Table 6.2 states that the secondary sector provides employment to only about 24 per cent of the workforce. The detailed sector-wise trend table also shows the secondary sector at 24.1 per cent in 2023-24. Hence the correct answer is about 24 per cent.

It is unemployment that occurs when there is no work available during part of the year because farm work is seasonal.

Seasonal unemployment happens when work is available only in certain months of the year, especially in agriculture. People may migrate to urban areas for jobs and return when the rainy season begins because there is no farm work in the village for all months. This makes the first option correct.
