1. Meaning and Importance of Consumer Protection
- Consumer protection means safeguarding the interests of consumers against unethical and unfair business practices.
- Consumers can face problems such as adulteration, counterfeit goods, sub-standard goods, defective goods, misleading advertisements, overcharging, hoarding, and black marketing.
- The market has shifted from caveat emptor, which means Let the buyer beware, to caveat venditor, which means Let the seller beware.
2. Consumer Protection Act 2019
- The Consumer Protection Act 2019 replaced the Consumer Protection Act 1986.
- It extends to the whole of India.
- It covers manufacturers, traders, service providers, and e-commerce firms.
3. Six Consumer Rights
- The Consumer Protection Act 2019 provides for six rights of consumers.
- Right to Safety protects against goods and services hazardous to life, health, and property.
- Right to be informed means complete information about the product, including ingredients, date of manufacture, price, quantity, and directions for use.
4. Consumer Responsibilities
- Consumer protection works best when consumers also act responsibly.
- Consumers should be aware of goods and services before buying.
- Consumers should buy standardised goods and look for quality marks such as ISI mark, FPO mark, and Hallmark.
