Key Topics to Revise
1. Meaning and Principles of Mathematical Modelling
- Mathematical modelling is an activity in which models are made to describe the behaviour of various phenomenal activities of interest using words, drawings, sketches, computer programs, and mathematic
- Mathematical modelling is closely linked with mathematical physics, mathematical economics, operations research, and bio-mathematics.
- A good model starts from a real situation, uses suitable variables and assumptions, applies known laws, and checks whether the result matches observation.
2. Five Steps of Mathematical Modelling
- The modelling process follows an iterative cycle.
- Step 1 identifies the physical situation.
- Step 2 converts the situation into a mathematical model using parameters, variables, symbols, and known physical laws.
3. Tower Height Model
- The tower height problem uses trigonometry in a modelling form.
- Let AB be the tower, with A as the top and B as the foot.
- Let PQ be the observer, with P as eye position and Q as the foot position of the observer.
4. Matrix Model for Purchase Orders and Raw Materials
- Matrix methods are used to represent purchase orders and raw material requirements.
- Matrix A represents purchase orders of products P1, P2, P3 from clients F1 and F2.
- Matrix B represents the amount of raw materials R1, R2, R3 required to manufacture each unit of products P1, P2, P3.
