  • The atmosphere has five main layers: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere.
  • Layers are identified by changes in temperature and density with height.
  • The troposphere has an average height of about 12 kilometres.

  • Weather refers to the hour-to-hour and day-to-day condition of the atmosphere.
  • Climate refers to the sum total of weather conditions and variations over a large area for an extended period, usually thirty years or more.
  • Important elements of weather and climate are temperature, precipitation, humidity, wind, and atmospheric pressure.

4. Seasons in India

  • The Indian Meteorological Department has recognised four distinct seasons in India.
  • Winter generally lasts from December to early April.
  • Summer or pre-monsoon lasts from April to June, or up to July in north-western India.
