What is Sprouting (Germination)?
- When a seed starts to grow, a tiny shoot comes out of it. This process is called sprouting or germination.
- Sprouted seeds are very nutritious and healthy to eat. Doctors often advise sick people to eat sprouts.
- Common seeds that are sprouted at home include chana (gram), moong, wheat, and rajma.
Conditions Needed for Germination — The Three Bowls Experiment
- Bowl 1: Seeds fully covered with water — gets water but NO air — Seeds do NOT sprout.
- Bowl 2: Seeds kept on damp cloth or cotton wool — gets BOTH water and air — Seeds DO sprout.
- Bowl 3: Seeds kept dry with nothing else — gets air but NO water — Seeds do NOT sprout.
Types and Variety of Seeds
- Seeds come in many different shapes, sizes, colours, and textures (smooth or rough).
- Seeds can be classified into groups: seeds used as spices, seeds of vegetables, seeds of fruits, light seeds, flat seeds, etc.

- Seed dispersal means the spreading of seeds to different places so new plants can grow.
