Topics in Super Senses
The Amazing World of Animal Senses
- Animals can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel – just like humans.
- Some animals have one or more senses that are much stronger than those of human beings.
- A crow can spot food from very far away because of its sharp eyesight.
The Sense of Smell in Animals
- Ants leave a smell (chemical trail) on the ground as they move. Other ants follow this smell to find food and their way back to the hole.
- When you block an ant's path, it gets confused because the smell trail is broken.
- Ants from the same group recognise each other by their smell.
The Sense of Sight in Animals
- Most birds have eyes on either side of their head. This helps them see in two different directions at the same time.
- Birds like owls and humans have eyes in front of the head. This helps them judge distance better.
- Birds cannot move their eyes like humans can. So they turn their heads to see around them.
The Sense of Hearing in Animals
- Birds do not have visible ears. They have small holes covered by feathers instead of outer ears.
- Animals with bigger ears generally have a better sense of hearing.
- Putting your hands behind your ears (like a cup) makes sound seem louder – this is because it collects more sound waves.
