Key Topics to Revise
Comparing Numbers
- A number with MORE digits is ALWAYS greater than a number with fewer digits.
- If two numbers have the SAME number of digits, compare the leftmost (highest place value) digit first.
- If the leftmost digits are equal, move to the next digit and compare again.
Forming Greatest and Smallest Numbers from Given Digits
- To form the GREATEST number: arrange the given digits in DESCENDING order (largest digit first).
- To form the SMALLEST number: arrange the given digits in ASCENDING order (smallest digit first).
- IMPORTANT RULE: If 0 is one of the digits, it CANNOT be placed at the leftmost position (as that would reduce the number of digits).
Place Value and Expanding Large Numbers
- Place value chart (Indian System): Ones (O), Tens (T), Hundreds (H), Thousands (Th), Ten Thousands (TTh), Lakhs (L), Ten Lakhs (TL), Crores (C), Ten Crores (TC).
- Expansion of a number: Write each digit multiplied by its place value.
- Example: 45278 = 4×10000 + 5×1000 + 2×100 + 7×10 + 8×1.
Indian and International Systems of Numeration
- INDIAN SYSTEM: Places are — Ones, Tens, Hundreds | Thousands, Ten Thousands | Lakhs, Ten Lakhs | Crores, Ten Crores.
- INDIAN SYSTEM commas: First comma after 3 digits from right (marks thousands), second comma after 5 digits from right (marks lakhs), third comma after 7 digits from right (marks crores).
