Key Topics to Revise
Natural Numbers and Whole Numbers
- Natural Numbers are the counting numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … They start from 1 and go on forever.
- There is NO largest natural number — you can always add 1 to get a bigger number.
- Whole Numbers = Natural Numbers + Zero. So Whole Numbers are: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …
Predecessor and Successor
- The SUCCESSOR of any number is the number that comes just AFTER it. Successor = Number + 1.
- The PREDECESSOR of any number is the number that comes just BEFORE it. Predecessor = Number – 1.
- Every Natural Number has a successor.
The Number Line
- A Number Line is a straight line on which Whole Numbers are marked at equal distances (unit distances) from each other.
- On the Number Line: mark 0 first, then mark 1 to the right of 0 at unit distance, then 2 to the right of 1, and so on.
- Numbers to the RIGHT are GREATER. Numbers to the LEFT are SMALLER.
Operations on the Number Line
- ADDITION: To add two numbers on the Number Line, start at the first number and jump the second number of steps to the RIGHT. Example: 3 + 4 = Start at 3, jump 4 steps right → reach 7.
- SUBTRACTION: To subtract on the Number Line, start at the first number and jump the number of steps being subtracted to the LEFT. Example: 7 – 5 = Start at 7, jump 5 steps left → reach 2.
- MULTIPLICATION: To multiply on the Number Line, start at 0 and make equal jumps to the RIGHT. Example: 3 × 4 means start at 0, make 4 jumps of 3 units each → reach 12. So 3 × 4 = 12.
