Why Do We Need to Separate Substances?
- Mixtures contain two or more substances mixed together — they need to be separated before use.
- We separate substances to remove harmful or non-useful components from a mixture.
- We also separate substances to obtain two useful components that we need to use separately.
Method 1: Handpicking
- Handpicking means picking out impurities from a mixture by hand, one by one.
- Used when the impurity particles are large enough to be picked by hand.
- Best suited when the quantity of impurities is small.
Method 2: Threshing
- Threshing is used to separate grain seeds from their stalks after harvesting.
- In threshing, the stalks are beaten against a hard surface to free the grain seeds.
- Farmers use this method after harvesting crops like wheat and paddy (rice).
Method 3: Winnowing
- Winnowing is used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture using wind or blown air.
- Most commonly used to separate husk (lighter) from grain seeds (heavier).
- The mixture is poured from a height in a place with wind or breeze.
