Appearance: Lustre and Hardness

  • LUSTRE means a shiny appearance on the surface of a material.
  • Metals like iron, copper, aluminium, and gold have lustre — they appear shiny.
  • To see the lustre of a metal, look at its freshly cut surface, because air and moisture can make metals appear dull over time.

Solubility: Soluble and Insoluble Materials

  • When a solid substance is added to water and stirred, it may completely dissolve or it may not.
  • SOLUBLE substances: completely dissolve in water and disappear. Example: salt, sugar, copper sulphate.
  • INSOLUBLE substances: do not dissolve in water, even after stirring for a long time. Example: sand, chalk powder, sawdust.
