Types of Plants: Herbs, Shrubs, Trees, Creepers, and Climbers

  • Plants are classified based on their height, nature of stem, and where branches appear.
  • HERBS: Small plants with green, tender (soft) stems. They usually do not have many branches. Examples: Wheat, Grass, Tomato, Mint.
  • SHRUBS: Medium-sized plants with hard but not very thick stems. Branches grow near the BASE of the stem (close to the ground). Examples: Rose, Lemon, China rose, Tulsi.

The Stem and Its Functions

  • The stem is the main central part of the plant that grows upward from the soil.
  • The stem BEARS (holds) leaves, branches, buds, flowers, and fruits.
  • FUNCTION 1 — CONDUCTION: The stem conducts (carries) water and minerals UPWARD from roots to leaves and other parts.

The Leaf: Structure and Functions

  • Leaves are the food factories of the plant — they make food for the entire plant.
  • STRUCTURE OF A LEAF: Every leaf has two main parts — (1) Petiole: the stalk that attaches the leaf to the stem, and (2) Lamina: the broad, flat, green part of the leaf.
  • Some leaves do not have a petiole — they are directly attached to the stem.

The Root: Types and Functions

  • Roots are the underground part of the plant (in most plants). They grow into the soil.
  • FUNCTION 1 — ABSORPTION: Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.
  • FUNCTION 2 — ANCHORAGE: Roots hold (anchor) the plant firmly in the soil, preventing it from falling over.
