Who Are Adivasis?
- The word 'Adivasi' = 'Adi' (olden times) + 'Vasi' (inhabitant) — meaning the original inhabitants of India.
- The Constitution of India recognizes specific Adivasi groups in a 'Schedule', so they are called Scheduled Tribes.
- Adivasis lived in forests, mountains, deserts, and remote areas across India.

Way of Life and Culture of Adivasis
- Adivasi communities have a distinctive identity through their attire, ornaments, festivals, dialects, painting, music, and dance.
- In Gujarat: North Gujarat men wore dhoti, shirt, and faliyu; Eastern belt men wore black baniyaan and short dhoti; South Gujarat men wore dhoti/pyjama and paheran. Women in North Gujarat wore 'Zuladi'
- Today, most tribal communities wear mainstream clothing and use traditional dress only during special festivals.

Major Tribal Areas of India
- Tribal populations are found in most parts of India — their areas and influence changed over time.
- Punjab (13th–14th century): Khokhar and Gakhhar were major tribes. Kamal Khan Gakhhar was made a mansabdar by Akbar.
- Before Mughals: Multan and Sindh were dominated by Langha and Arghun tribes.

- Gonds are one of the OLDEST tribes of India, living in the vast forest region called 'Gondwana'.
- They practised shifting agriculture.
- Gond tribe was divided into many small clans — each clan had a king.
