Types of Graphs – A Quick Recap

  • Data is information collected to study a particular situation. Example: marks scored by students in a test.
  • A Pictograph uses pictures or symbols to represent data. Each symbol stands for a fixed number of items.
  • A Bar Graph uses bars of uniform width. The height of each bar is proportional to the value it represents.

Pie Chart (Circle Graph)

  • A pie chart (circle graph) shows how a whole is divided into parts. The entire circle represents the total (100% or 360°).
  • The circle is divided into sectors. The size of each sector is proportional to the value it represents.
  • The total angle at the centre of a circle = 360°. All sector angles must add up to 360°.

Chance and Probability

  • Probability measures the LIKELIHOOD or CHANCE of an event occurring. It is always a number between 0 and 1.
  • Probability = 0 means the event is IMPOSSIBLE (e.g., getting 7 on a standard die).
  • Probability = 1 means the event is CERTAIN (e.g., getting a number between 1 and 6 on a standard die).
