What is Addition?

  • Addition means combining two or more numbers to get a bigger number.
  • The symbol for addition is '+' (plus).
  • The answer in addition is called the 'sum'.

Ways to Add Numbers

  • We can add by counting forward from the first number.
  • Zero added to any number gives the same number.
  • Changing the order of numbers does not change the sum.

Adding Using Place Value (Without Carry Over)

  • We can add two-digit numbers by adding ones first, then tens.
  • No carry over means the sum of ones is less than 10.
  • Always write the answer in the correct column (ones or tens).

Adding With Carry Over

  • When the sum of ones is 10 or more, we carry over 1 to the tens column.
  • Carry over means moving 1 ten from ones to tens column.
  • We write the extra ones in the ones place and add 1 to the tens.
