  • Regression analysis helps analyze and understand the relationship between two or more variables of interest.
  • It was developed by Sir Francis Galton in 1877 to measure the relationship of height between parents and their children.
  • Regression is used to predict continuous variables such as market trends, house prices, and weather.

2. Types of Regression

  • Simple Linear Regression models the relationship between a single independent variable and a dependent variable using a linear equation.
  • Multiple Linear Regression extends simple linear regression to include multiple independent variables.
  • Polynomial Regression models a non-linear relationship by fitting a polynomial equation, but it is still considered a form of linear regression because the coefficients are calculated in a linear fash

3. Regression Coefficient and Interpretation

  • A regression coefficient quantifies the change in dependent variable for a unit change in an independent variable while holding other independent variables constant.
  • Regression coefficient is also known as the slope coefficient.
  • In simple linear regression, the coefficient represents the slope of the regression line.

  • Linear regression is the simplest form of regression.
  • It assumes a straight-line relationship between the independent variable x and the dependent variable y.
  • The regression line is the best-fitting straight line through the data points.
