Meaning and Nature of Law
- The word law comes from the old Teutonic root lag, meaning to lay, place, set, or fix something evenly.
- The word law also derives from the Latin word jus, connected with jungere, which suggests a bond or tie.
- A broad idea of law is that it controls conduct in society.

Sources of Law
- Custom is the earliest source of law and comes from well-established practices of the people.
- Religion is a source of law through holy books and their interpretations by priests and divines.
- Adjudication means law grows through the decisions of judges, who are regarded as the wisest men of the community.

Kinds of Law
- Natural law, also called Dharma, is abstract and is thought to be authored by nature or supernatural agency.
- Positive law is concrete and man-made.
- Natural law is sanctioned by respect for or fear of supernatural power.
