  • A singular noun names one person, animal, place, or thing.
  • A plural noun names more than one.
  • Most plural nouns are formed by adding -s or -es to the singular form.

Rules for Forming Plural Nouns

  • Add -s to most nouns: cat → cats.
  • Add -es to nouns ending in s, ss, sh, ch, x: bus → buses, box → boxes.
  • Add -es to most nouns ending in 'o': potato → potatoes, hero → heroes (but: photo → photos, piano → pianos).
