Topics in Negative Sentenses

1

What Are Negative Sentences?

  • A negative sentence says that something is not true or did not happen.
  • Words like 'not', 'no', 'never', 'nothing', 'don't', 'doesn't', 'didn't', 'isn't', 'aren't', 'wasn't' are used in negative sentences.
  • Example: 'She is happy' becomes 'She is not happy'.
2

How to Make Sentences Negative

  • For the verb 'be' (am, is, are, was, were), add 'not' after the verb.
  • For 'have/has/had', you can say 'have no' or 'do not have'.
  • For modal verbs (will, should, can), put 'not' after the modal.
3

Special Cases and Examples

  • With 'have' for possession, you can say 'I have no pen' or 'I don't have a pen'.
  • In questions, the structure changes slightly, but for negatives, we focus on statements.
  • Use 'never' to mean 'not ever' — it gives a stronger negative meaning.
