  • Water is a compound made of hydrogen and oxygen with the chemical formula H₂O.
  • It was once thought to be an element, but Henry Cavendish proved it is a compound in 1781.
  • One molecule of water contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

2. Occurrence and States of Water

  • 70% of Earth's surface is covered with water, but only 1% is usable by living beings.
  • Water exists in three states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour).
  • In nature, water is found in oceans (97%), glaciers (2%), and rivers/lakes/groundwater (1%).

3. Sources of Water

  • Main sources: Surface water (rivers, lakes, oceans), Underground water (wells, springs), Atmospheric water (rain).
  • Rainwater is the purest natural form of water.
  • Sea water is saline and not fit for drinking or irrigation.

4. Water as a Universal Solvent

  • Water can dissolve many solids, liquids, and gases, so it is called a universal solvent.
  • A solution has two parts: solute (substance dissolved) and solvent (liquid in which it dissolves).
  • Solutions are homogeneous mixtures.
