2. Occurrence and States of Water

  • Rainwater is the purest natural form of water.
  • Sea water is saline and not fit for drinking or irrigation.

4. Water as a Universal Solvent

  • Water can dissolve many solids, liquids, and gases, so it is called a universal solvent.
  • A solution has two parts: solute (substance dissolved) and solvent (liquid in which it dissolves).
  • Solutions are homogeneous mixtures.
