Presence and Properties of Air

  • Air is present everywhere — on land, in water, and in the atmosphere.
  • Air is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and transparent.
  • Air occupies space and has mass.

Composition of Air

  • Air is a mixture of gases: 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03–0.04% carbon dioxide, and 0.9% inert gases.
  • Water vapour, dust particles, and pollutants are also present in varying amounts.
  • Oxygen supports burning and respiration; nitrogen dilutes oxygen and prevents rapid burning.

Uses of Air Components

  • Oxygen: Used for respiration and burning (combustion).
  • Nitrogen: Used to make proteins in plants, in fertilizers, and for food packaging.
  • Carbon dioxide: Used in photosynthesis, fire extinguishers, and fizzy drinks.

Balance of Gases and Natural Processes

  • Respiration and burning use oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
  • Photosynthesis in plants uses CO₂ and releases oxygen, balancing the gases.
  • Photosynthesis occurs only in green plants during daytime using sunlight and chlorophyll.
