Topics in Elements, Compounds, Symbols and Formulae

1

Pure Substances: Elements and Compounds

  • A pure substance has a fixed composition and consistent properties throughout.
  • Pure substances are of two types: elements and compounds.
  • Elements are made of only one kind of atom and cannot be broken down further by physical or chemical means.
2

Classification of Elements

  • Elements are classified into four types: metals, non-metals, metalloids, and noble gases.
  • Metals are shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity (except mercury, which is liquid).
  • Non-metals are generally dull, brittle, poor conductors, and can be solids, liquids, or gases (bromine is liquid).
3

Symbols and Formulae

  • Each element has a symbol — usually the first letter or first two letters of its name.
  • If the symbol comes from Latin, it may not match the English name (e.g., Na for sodium from Natrium).
  • A molecular formula shows the types and numbers of atoms in a molecule.
4

Atoms and Molecules

  • An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains its properties.
  • A molecule is the smallest particle of an element or compound that can exist independently.
  • Molecules of elements contain same type of atoms (e.g., O₂, H₂).
