Key Topics to Revise

1

What is a Machine?

  • A machine is a device that helps us do work more easily.
  • It can reduce the effort needed, change the direction of force, or make the task convenient.
  • Machines do not reduce the total work but help us apply less force.
2

Mechanical Advantage

  • Mechanical advantage (MA) is the ratio of load to effort.
  • Higher MA means less effort is needed to lift a heavy load.
  • MA can be greater than 1 (force multiplier), equal to 1, or less than 1.
3

Types of Simple Machines

  • There are six simple machines: lever, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge, and screw.
  • Each machine helps in different ways — reducing effort, changing direction, or increasing distance.
  • Most tools we use daily are combinations of these machines.
4

Levers: Three Classes

  • Levers are classified into three types based on the position of fulcrum, load, and effort.
  • Class I: Fulcrum in the middle (e.g., see-saw, scissors).
  • Class II: Load in the middle (e.g., wheelbarrow, nutcracker). MA > 1.
