1. Air as a Mixture

  • Air extends to about 300 km above the Earth's surface.
  • Air is a mixture, not a compound.
  • Air contains nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour, inert gases, dust particles, smoke, and germs.

2. Main Gases in Air

  • Nitrogen is the main constituent of air and is slightly lighter than air as a whole.
  • Nitrogen is neither combustible nor a supporter of combustion.
  • Nitrogen is non-poisonous, but animals die in pure nitrogen due to lack of oxygen.

3. Discovery and Preparation of Oxygen

  • Oxygen was first discovered by Joseph Priestley in 1774 by heating mercury(II) oxide.
  • Priestley named it active air.
  • Antoine Lavoisier studied the gas in 1789, proved it to be an element, and named it oxygen.

4. Properties and Uses of Oxygen

  • Oxygen is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas.
  • Oxygen is non-poisonous and supports life.
  • Oxygen is slightly heavier than air.
