What is Matter?
- Matter has three features: it has mass, occupies space, and can be perceived by senses.
- The quantity of matter a body contains is its mass.
- The space occupied by a body is its volume.
Composition of Matter
- Matter is made up of extremely small particles called atoms.
- Molecules are bigger than atoms, but both are too small to be seen with the naked eye or an ordinary microscope.
- Atoms usually do not have independent existence, so they combine to form molecules.
Particles of Matter
- Particles of matter have spaces between them called intermolecular or interparticular spaces.
- Sugar dissolves in water because sugar particles fit into the spaces between water molecules.
- A spoon dipped in water raises the water level because it occupies space.
States of Matter
- The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
- If the force of attraction increases, molecules move closer and space decreases.
- If the force of attraction decreases, molecules move apart and space increases.
