Topics in Matter and Its Composition

1

What is Matter?

  • Matter has three features: it has mass, occupies space, and can be perceived by senses.
  • The quantity of matter a body contains is its mass.
  • The space occupied by a body is its volume.
2

Composition of Matter

  • Matter is made up of extremely small particles called atoms.
  • Molecules are bigger than atoms, but both are too small to be seen with the naked eye or an ordinary microscope.
  • Atoms usually do not have independent existence, so they combine to form molecules.
3

Particles of Matter

  • Particles of matter have spaces between them called intermolecular or interparticular spaces.
  • Sugar dissolves in water because sugar particles fit into the spaces between water molecules.
  • A spoon dipped in water raises the water level because it occupies space.
4

States of Matter

  • The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
  • If the force of attraction increases, molecules move closer and space decreases.
  • If the force of attraction decreases, molecules move apart and space increases.
