State the definition of sound.

Sound is a form of energy that produces the sensation of hearing in our ears.
What produces sound?
Answer
Sound is produced when a body vibrates. Each source of sound is a vibrating body.
Why does sound stop when a vibrating body stops vibrating?
Answer
Sound ceases when the vibrating body stops vibrating. Example: the humming sound from a vibrating ruler stops when the ruler stops vibrating.
What is vibratory motion?
Answer
Vibratory motion is the oscillatory motion in which the body assumes a new shape during its motion.
What is a tuning fork?
Answer
A tuning fork is a U-shaped metallic piece with a stem in the middle. Its arms are called prongs. When struck on a rubber pad, the prongs vibrate and produce sound.
How does a tuning fork show vibration?
Answer
When a tuning fork is struck and brought near a suspended table tennis ball, the ball jumps to and fro on touching the prong. This shows that the prongs are vibrating.
How is sound produced in humans?
Answer
The larynx, also called the voice box, produces human sound. Air from the lungs passes through the vocal cords, and the cords vibrate to produce sound.
What happens to vocal cords during breathing and during talking?
Answer
During breathing, vocal cords are loose and the gap between them increases. During talking, shouting, or singing, vocal cords become tight and vibrate.
