What to Focus On

  • Hydrogen, oxygen, and water vapour are neutral in nature.
  • Carbon dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and nitrogen dioxide are acidic gases.
  • Ammonia is the only basic gas in the list.

  • Heating can remove water of crystallization.
  • Some salts decompose to give gases such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen dioxide, or sulphur dioxide.
  • Lead oxide is brown when hot and yellow when cold.

  • Reactive metals give hydrogen gas with dilute acid.
  • Carbonates and bicarbonates give carbon dioxide.
  • Sulphides give hydrogen sulphide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any acidic gas that turns lime water milky must be carbon dioxide.

Chlorine and hydrogen chloride can be identified only by silver nitrate because both give a white precipitate.

Sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide are the same because both have a bad smell and come from sulphur compounds.
