  • There are 3 main sectors of the economy.
  • Primary sector activities are based directly on natural resources such as land, water, forest, and minerals.
  • Secondary sector transforms natural products into other forms by manufacturing.

2. Interdependence Between the Three Sectors

  • The three sectors are highly interdependent and complementary to each other.
  • The primary sector, mainly agriculture, gets inputs like fertilisers, pesticides, pump sets, and tractors from the secondary sector.
  • The secondary sector gets raw materials such as cotton, jute, sugarcane, oilseeds, and wool from the primary sector.

3. Share in Total Production or GDP

  • Total Production or GDP is the sum of production of final goods in the three sectors.
  • Final goods are goods sold to their final users.
  • In 1973, primary sector share in GDP was 40%, secondary sector 12%, and tertiary sector 48%.

4. Share in Total Employment and Occupational Structure

  • The share of different sectors in the total employment of a country is called occupational structure.
  • In 1972-73, primary sector employed 74% of the workforce, secondary sector 11%, and tertiary sector 15%.
  • In 2023-24, primary sector employed 42% of the workforce, secondary sector 26%, and tertiary sector 32%.
