- Carbohydrates are optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or compounds that yield such units on hydrolysis
- Monosaccharides cannot be hydrolysed further
- Glucose is D(+)-glucose

- It exists as α- and β-anomers
- Fructose is a ketohexose
- It is obtained with glucose from sucrose hydrolysis
- Fructose is D-(-)-fructose
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Every compound that fits the formula Cx(H2O)y is a carbohydrate.
All monosaccharides are reducing sugars only if they are aldoses; ketoses are not reducing sugars.
D and L notation tell whether a compound is dextrorotatory or laevorotatory.
