1. Land-Use Categories and Land Ownership
- Land-use records are maintained by the land revenue department.
- Land-use categories add up to reporting area, which is different from geographical area measured by the Survey of India.
- Area classified as forest is different from actual forest cover.
2. Land-Use Change in India
- Between 1950-51 and 2019-20, five land-use categories increased: forest, non-agricultural uses, permanent pasture and grazing land, current fallow, and net area sown.
- Four land-use categories declined: barren and wasteland, culturable wasteland, area under tree crops and groves, and fallow other than current fallow.
- The highest rate of increase is in land under non-agricultural uses.
3. Cultivable Land, Cropping Intensity, and Land-Saving Technologies
- Total cultivable land can be estimated by adding net sown area, all fallow lands, and culturable wasteland.
- The scope for adding more land to net sown area is limited in India.
- Land-saving technologies are necessary because land is scarce but population and food demand are high.
4. Cropping Seasons and Types of Farming
- India has three distinct crop seasons in the northern and interior parts: kharif, rabi, and zaid.
- Kharif coincides with the Southwest Monsoon and supports tropical crops such as rice, cotton, jute, jowar, bajra, and tur.
- Rabi begins in October-November and ends in March-April; major crops include wheat, gram, and mustard.
