1. Meaning of regional aspirations and the Indian approach
- Regional aspirations are not outside democracy; they are part of democratic politics.
- India accepted unity with diversity by allowing different regions and linguistic groups to retain their culture.
- The Indian nation did not mean the negation of the region.
2. Jammu and Kashmir: autonomy, identity, and conflict
- Jammu and Kashmir had special status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.
- J&K has three regions: Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.
- Jammu is predominantly Hindu-inhabited, Kashmir is predominantly Kashmiri Muslim-inhabited, and Ladakh has a population almost equally divided between Buddhists and Muslims.
3. Punjab: linguistic state, autonomy, militancy, and peace
- Punjab had to wait till 1966 for the creation of a Punjabi-speaking state.
- The Akali Dal was formed in 1920 as the political wing of the Sikhs.
- Master Tara Singh was a prominent early Akali leader and the senior most advocate of a separate Punjab State after Independence.
4. The North-East: autonomy, secession, and outsider politics
- The North-East has about 4 per cent of India’s population but about twice the area share, connected to the rest of India by a 22 km corridor.
- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and Meghalaya are called the seven sisters.
- Sikkim is referred to as the Brother among North-East states.
