- Particles have spaces between them allowing other particles to fit in
- Particles attract each other with varying force depending on the substance
States of Matter
- Three main states: Solid, Liquid, Gas - differ in particle arrangement and movement
- Solids: Fixed shape, fixed volume, particles closely packed, strong intermolecular forces
- Liquids: Fixed volume, no fixed shape, particles less tightly packed, moderate forces
Change of State
- State changes occur due to temperature and pressure changes
- Melting: Solid → Liquid (at melting point), requires latent heat of fusion
- Boiling: Liquid → Gas (at boiling point), requires latent heat of vaporization
Evaporation
- Surface phenomenon - only surface particles change to vapor below boiling point
- Occurs at all temperatures, unlike boiling which occurs at specific temperature
- Factors affecting evaporation: surface area, temperature, humidity, wind speed
