Production of Sound

  • Sound is produced when objects vibrate - rapid to and fro motion
  • Examples: tuning fork, vocal cords, musical instruments, buzzing bee wings
  • Vibration can be created by striking, plucking, scratching, rubbing, blowing, or shaking objects

Propagation of Sound

  • Sound requires a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to travel - cannot travel through vacuum
  • Sound travels as compressions (high pressure regions) and rarefactions (low pressure regions)
  • Particles of medium oscillate about their mean position but do not travel with the wave

Characteristics of Sound Waves

  • Wavelength (λ): Distance between two consecutive compressions or rarefactions
  • Frequency (ν): Number of complete oscillations per unit time, measured in Hertz (Hz)

  • Speed of sound varies with medium: fastest in solids, slower in liquids, slowest in gases
