Introduction to Tissues
- A tissue is a group of cells similar in structure and/or work together to achieve a particular function
- Unicellular organisms like Amoeba perform all functions with a single cell
- Multicellular organisms show division of labour - different cells perform different functions

Differences Between Plant and Animal Tissues
- Plants are stationary, animals are mobile - affects tissue structure
- Plants need more supportive tissue (often dead cells) to stay upright
- Animals need more living tissues as they consume more energy

Plant Tissues - Meristematic Tissue
- Growth occurs only in specific regions containing meristematic tissue
- Three types based on location: Apical, Lateral, Intercalary
- Apical meristem: at growing tips of stems and roots - increases length

Plant Tissues - Simple Permanent Tissue
- Formed when meristematic cells differentiate and lose ability to divide
- Parenchyma: most common, thin-walled living cells, stores food, large intercellular spaces
- Chlorenchyma: parenchyma with chlorophyll for photosynthesis
