7.1 Basic Concepts of Motion

  • Motion is the change in position of an object with respect to time
  • Rest and motion are relative concepts - an object can appear at rest for one observer and in motion for another
  • Reference point (origin) is essential to describe the position of any object

  • Distance is the total path length covered by an object (scalar quantity)
  • Displacement is the shortest distance between initial and final positions (vector quantity)
  • Distance is always positive, displacement can be positive, negative, or zero

  • Speed is the rate of change of distance (scalar quantity)
  • Velocity is the rate of change of displacement (vector quantity)
  • Average speed = Total distance / Total time

7.4 Acceleration

  • Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
  • Acceleration = (Final velocity - Initial velocity) / Time
  • SI unit: m/s²
