Methane reacts with chlorine in presence of sunlight to form chloromethane: CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl
Ethene reacts with hydrogen in presence of nickel catalyst: C₂H₄ + H₂ → C₂H₆
Example: CH₃-CH₂-CH₃ → CH₄ + CH₂=CH₂.
Example: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O + Heat.

Laboratory preparation: 2NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ → CaCl₂ + 2H₂O + 2NH₃
Step 1: S + O₂ → SO₂ (burning sulphur)
Strong monobasic acid: HCl → H⁺ + Cl⁻
Industrial preparation: H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl (direct combination)
Manufacturing involves: (1) S + O₂ → SO₂, (2) 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃ (with V₂O₅ catalyst), (3) SO₃ + H₂SO₄ → H₂S₂O₇ (oleum), (4) H₂S₂O₇ + H₂O → 2H₂SO₄.

Combined gas equation: P₁V₁/T₁ = P₂V₂/T₂ combines all three laws
At constant temperature, volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to pressure: V ∝ 1/P or PV = k (constant).
At constant pressure, volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to absolute temperature: V ∝ T or V/T = k.
Formula: V₁/T₁ = V₂/T₂.
Combines all gas laws: PV/T = k (constant).
