Key Topics to Revise

1

Substitution Reactions

  • Substitution reactions involve replacement of one atom or group with another atom or group
  • Methane reacts with chlorine in presence of sunlight to form chloromethane: CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl
  • Further substitution produces dichloromethane (CH₂Cl₂), trichloromethane (CHCl₃), and tetrachloromethane (CCl₄)
2

Addition Reactions

  • Addition reactions occur with unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes and alkynes)
  • Ethene reacts with hydrogen in presence of nickel catalyst: C₂H₄ + H₂ → C₂H₆
  • Double and triple bonds break to form single bonds
3

Polymerisation

  • Process where simple molecules (monomers) join to form large molecules (polymers)
  • Two types: Addition polymerisation and Condensation polymerisation
  • Addition polymerisation: monomers add without elimination of small molecules
4

Thermal Cracking

  • Breaking of large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller ones by heating in absence of air
  • Produces both saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
  • Products depend on temperature, pressure, and nature of starting hydrocarbon
