Physiographic Divisions of India

  • India is divided into five major physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the North Indian Plains, the Peninsula, Coastal Plains, and Island groups.
  • The Himalayas are young fold mountains and extend from Pamir Knot in Tajikistan to the east. In India, they extend from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Himalayas have many parallel ranges. From south to north, these are Siwaliks, Lesser Himalayas, Greater Himalayas or Himadri, and Trans Himalayan ranges.

Physiography of Brazil

  • Brazil has five physiographic divisions: the Highlands, the Coastal region, the Island groups, the Great Escarpment, and the Plains.
  • A large part of Brazil is occupied by highlands, plateaus, and small mountains.
  • The Brazilian Highlands occupy southern Brazil and are also called Brazilian Shield or Brazilian Plateau.

Drainage of India

  • Rivers in India are classified into Himalayan rivers and Peninsular rivers.
  • Himalayan rivers are perennial because they are fed by glaciers and also receive rain during monsoons.
  • The main Himalayan river systems are the Indus and the Ganga.

Drainage of Brazil

  • Brazil has three major river basins: the Amazon Basin, the Paraguay-Parana system in the southwest, and Sao Francisco with other coastal rivers.
  • Amazon collects its headwaters from the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains in Peru.
  • Amazon has a huge discharge of about 2 lakh m3/s, or 2,09,000 cu.m/sec.
