Key Topics to Revise
1. Watershed Area: Meaning and Planning
- Watershed area means the whole area where water naturally flows from mountains through small streams and a nallah.
- Such an area can range from 50 hectares to 500 hectares or more, depending on land elevation.
- Watershed area development should first prioritize small watershed areas selected according to geographical location.
2. Continuous Contour Trenches and Planting on Hill Slope
- Continuous Contour Trenches are dug according to the slope of the land to block rainwater and make it seep into the soil.
- If the slope of the land is high, the trenches should be dug nearer together.
- If the slope is low, the trenches can be dug at a longer distance apart.
3. Loose Boulder Structure
- Loose Boulder structures are small stone causeways laid one below the other along the stream slope to block flowing water.
- The base level of the upper causeway should equal the head level of the lower causeway.
- The height of such dams or causeways should be kept up to 2 meters depending on the slope of the land.
4. Nala Embankment or Nala Bunding
- Nala bunding uses earthen or cement causeways across a nala to block and store rainwater flow.
- If an earthen causeway or dam is constructed, the maximum height should be 4 meters.
- Black soil should be filled at the bottom of the nala base to prevent seepage.
