Key Topics to Revise
Nature and Classification of Matter
- Matter occupies space and has mass - can be classified into pure substances and mixtures
- Pure substances have definite composition and properties (elements and compounds)
- Elements cannot be broken down by chemical means (metals, non-metals, metalloids)
Laws of Chemical Combination
- Law of Conservation of Mass: Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products
- Law of Definite Proportions: A compound always contains same elements in same proportion by mass
- Law of Multiple Proportions: When two elements form multiple compounds, masses of one element combining with fixed mass of another are in simple whole number ratios
Atomic Theory and Atomic Mass
- Dalton's Atomic Theory: Matter consists of indivisible atoms, atoms of same element are identical, compounds form by combining atoms in fixed ratios
- Atomic mass is measured relative to C-12 isotope (assigned exactly 12 u)
- 1 atomic mass unit (u) = 1.66056 × 10⁻²⁴ g
Mole Concept and Molar Mass
- 1 mole = 6.022 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro's number)
- Mole is SI base unit for amount of substance
- Molar mass = mass of 1 mole of substance in grams
