From the table, pressure decreases by about 1 mb for each 10 m rise in height in the lower atmosphere. At 1 km = 1000 m, the decrease is about 100 mb. So, if surface pressure is 1000 mb, the pressure at 1 km is:

1000100=9001000 - 100 = 900 mb

So the correct option is (c) 900 mb.

The unit used to measure atmospheric pressure is millibar (mb). Pressure measured at a station is reduced to sea level so that places at different heights can be compared fairly on weather maps, because pressure decreases with height.

2(ii)While the pressure gradient force is from north to south, i.e. from the subtropical high pressure to the equator in the northern hemisphere, why are the winds north easterlies in the tropics.Show solution
Although the pressure gradient force acts from the subtropical high towards the equator, the winds in the tropics become north-easterlies because the Coriolis force deflects moving air to the right in the Northern Hemisphere. So the air moving southward is turned toward the west, producing north-easterly trade winds.

Attempt to infer the atmospheric circulation from the distribution of clouds. Compare the forecast given in the newspaper with the TV coverage, if you have access to TV. Estimate, how many days in a week was the forecast were accurate.
