Nomadic Empires

Trade was significant to the Mongols because the steppe lands were poor in resources. They needed agricultural produce, iron utensils and other goods from settled societies, especially China, in exchange for horses, furs and game from the steppe. Trade also helped them maintain relations with neighbouring peoples and later supported the wider Silk Route commerce under Mongol rule. It was therefore both economically useful and politically important.

Genghis Khan fragmented the Mongol tribes into new decimal military units to erase old tribal loyalties and create a stronger, more disciplined army. By breaking up clan and tribal groupings and mixing people from different lineages, he made soldiers depend on the Great Khan rather than on their old chieftains. This helped him control the confederacy, prevent rebellion, and build a more effective fighting force.

Later Mongol reflections on the yasa show an uneasy relationship with Genghis Khan because the meaning of the term changed over time. In its early use, it referred mainly to administrative regulations such as the hunt, army and postal system. Later Mongols turned it into the sacred law of Genghis Khan. This was partly a way to claim authority and unity, but it also shows that they were trying to preserve his memory while adapting to a very different life in cities and settled empires. They honoured him as a lawgiver, yet the later use of *yasa* was not necessarily the same as what he himself had intended.
