EXERCISES
1Why do we need to use special terms and concepts in sociology?Show solution
- distinguish common sense knowledge from sociological knowledge;
- describe social life clearly and precisely;
- understand different kinds of groups, inequality, status, roles and social control;
- compare societies and social changes;
- use concepts as tools or keys to interpret reality, while also questioning and modifying them when needed.
Since society is familiar to us, we may think we already know it, but sociology shows that we need concepts to see it properly and systematically.

2As a member of society you must be interacting with and in different groups. How do you see these groups from a sociological perspective?Show solution
- Some are primary groups, such as family and close friends, where interaction is intimate and face-to-face.
- Some are secondary groups, such as school, office, or associations, where relations are more formal and goal-oriented.
- Some are in-groups, where we feel a sense of “we” and belonging.
- Others are out-groups, to which we do not belong and which may be treated with distance or even hostility.
- Some groups may begin as quasi groups, like caste, class, age, or gender groups, and later become organised social groups.
- Some groups act as reference groups, whose lifestyle or behaviour people try to imitate.
So, sociologically, groups are not just collections of people; they are social relations with patterns, norms, belonging, and changing identities.

3What have you observed about the stratification system existing in your society? How are individual lives affected by stratification?Show solution
In society, stratification may be seen through differences of class, caste, gender, status, income, education, occupation and power. Some people have greater privileges and opportunities, while others face disadvantage and discrimination.
Individual lives are affected by stratification in many ways:
- access to education is unequal;
- chances of good health and long life differ;
- people have unequal income and employment opportunities;
- some enjoy more security and social respect;
- political influence is not equally shared;
- in caste societies, birth can strongly limit life chances.
Thus stratification shapes what people can achieve, how they are treated, and the opportunities available to them throughout life.
