What to Focus On

  • A firm is a producer that uses inputs to produce output.
  • Production function shows maximum output from given inputs and given technology.
  • If technology changes, the production function changes.
  • An isoquant shows input combinations producing the same output.
  • Isoquants are negatively sloped when marginal products are positive.
  • The same output can often be produced by different input combinations.
  • In the short run, at least one factor remains fixed.
  • In the long run, all factors are variable.
  • Short run and long run depend on variability of inputs, not time length.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Short run means a short calendar period, like a few days or months.

If one input is zero, the firm can still produce some output using the other input alone.

A production function shows the average output produced by inputs.
